Although made primarily for cosmetics purposes, the exquisite craftsmanship was clearly used to enable the lady to restore a sense of normality. Such was Gillingham's passion for those who by serious accident had been rendered disabled. In the 1800's many people were left out abandoned as 'crippled'. Gillingham gave them their life and in most cases their livelihoods back.
