Netherbrook Primary School has won the £3,000 first prize in a carol singing contest.

School choirs from across the Black Country have been taking part in Merry Hill Shopping Centre's annual Choir Competition.

Fifteen schools made it into the final, which was held on stage at the site on Friday December 7, 2007.

At the final, Netherbrook Primary School choir sang four songs “structured so that it told a small story of waiting for Santa and seeing him come down the chimney” said their music teacher Mrs Leigh Frost.

They sang; ‘The Night before Christmas’, ‘How do you introduce yourself to Father Christmas’, ‘Ho Ho Ho’ (a solo) and finished on an upbeat number – ‘It's Christmas’ (which featured dance moves).

“There were about 50 choirs that entered and we were judged on the quality of performance, the originality, the enthusiasm and enjoyment factor.” said Mrs Frost.

“The competition is a wonderful opportunity to share the work the children have been doing and really helps put the performance element of the musical curriculum into the spotlight.

“The children were very enthusiastic and worked so hard. The support we were given during the competition was marvellous. I am completely delighted and extremely proud!”

Netherbrook Primary’s £3,000 first prize will be spent on musical equipment for the school. Cradley Heath's Timbertree Primary took second place, winning £1000 and Glebefields Primary in Tipton came third, winning £500.

The three winning choirs will be presented with their prizes at a ceremony at the Shopping Centre, Thursday 13th December, from 4pm.
