My design for the Krulius’ spaceship was inspired by the character himself. Having watched several episodes of “Doctor Who” and “The Sarah Jane Adventures” for inspiration, I decided to take design inspiration both from the Krulius’ aesthetic and needs. I decided to use a more traditional flying saucer shape because of the Krulius’ scavenging, dishonest nature; I think that he would probably have taken at least some of the elements of his ship from his unfortunate victims. Although some areas of the ship are blacked-out windows, the vast majority of its surface is covered with a toxic, mould-like substance whose main property is one of camouflage. The Krulius is evil but also sneaky, and so this would correspond to his nature. In addition to hiding the ship from others, the mould can transfer and contaminate other objects. For example, during a chase through the asteroids (from the comic), the Krulius could slow opponents down by making the obstacles “invisible” after he had passed them. Despite its evil owner and purpose, I feel that this design in suitable for the audience of “The Sarah Jane Adventures” because it has been so closely linked to the character.
