Nerm's Travels In India (Part One)
It's been a week since I arrived in India and the place always blows me away. Every year Shiva Soundsystem and I tour India with a mixture of House, Electro, Breaks and Drum & Bass. Every year the audiences get bigger, more responsive and it's that much easier to get to the really heavy, glitchy side of Drum & Bass.
Bollywood is still all pervasive, powerful and controlling. However over the years, as India has prospered, it's citizens have been on the hunt for something new, something different and electrifying.
The electronic alternative music scene has always had an underground fan-base but it seems that now, the home-grown movement is finally breaking into the mainstream.

It has often been said¡the path to world peace is through a world filled with peaceful people. It¡¯s been my intention from day one, for people to feel that inner peace from the music I play on my show.
Where to begin? I believe that like everything else, when a critical mass of people has an idea, it influences the whole world. This critical mass of people are starting to think that ¡®dance music¡¯ is dying. It isn¡¯t. It¡¯s just going through various changes which we¡¯ll all have to embrace to keep up with technological advances. (Besides, rock music is on the up and dance music stems from rock). The Uni Tour 2006 kicked off last Friday night at Nottingham Trent Uni's Student Union, where we broadcast the show live on the Friction show. What a night! The Tour officially kicked off in one of my favourite cities in the UK. Nottingham has never failed to be a great place to party. Last night was no different. The one like Bobby Friction blasted off the tour with a wicked set playing some of the best Desi, D&B and grimey vibes. Jinx followed with a hype performance accompanied by Billa Sahota, a guy with an amazing voice. I loved the Jinx remix of ¡°Akhian Udeek Diyan¡±.

From the late sixties when Sergeant Pepper fought for cultural space with Ravi Shankar, to the UK Bhangra explosion of the 80¡¯s to Talvin Singh 's Mercury Music Prize victory in the 90¡¯s, our nation's relationship with ¡®Asian¡¯ music has always been a one night stand; its cultural importance relegated to a quick fumble under the sheets, not full lights-on-scream-out-loud passion.
