Summertime....

Kim Lenaghan¡and the living is easy. Indeed I am bringing this blog to you straight from my very sunny back garden. It¡¯s just like Gershwin said, everything is easier when the sun shines, the sky is blue and you can enjoy some quality outdoor time. Of course what¡¯s really interesting is the fact that it isn¡¯t, technically speaking, actually summer yet ¨C it¡¯s spring. So, there are two ways we can go with this. It¡¯s either a portent of a magnificent couple of months ahead ¨C the glass half full forecast ¨C or, as the begrudgers are fond of saying ¡°aye well, make the most of it now because this is probably all the summer you¡¯ll get.¡±

Naturally, I take the former view and as supporting evidence I would ask you to travel far back into your memory, to those wonderful summers of the mid to late seventies when I was at school. It was always like this from exam time, which is now, right through the holidays. You might say it¡¯s my imagination, or the gloss of nostalgia, but can I tell you I have both the photographs and the lines to show for it. Yes, those were the days when you¡¯d lie out from first thing in the morning baking in baby oil with only Radio I for company ¨C oh the ¡®Our Tunes¡¯ I enjoyed courtesy of Simon Bates!

Naturally all that was long before we were so aware of the links between sunbathing and skin cancer - and believe me nobody told me about the wrinkle thing or I would have stayed pale and interesting. Of course now it¡¯s too late and the damage is done I never leave the house without my factor 15 on my bake and anyway, I can¡¯t be bothered to lie in the sun any more ¨C life is too short and it¡¯s too boring.

One thing that is interesting is that it seems the fates above are being very kind to the smokers ¨C or are they. You might think it¡¯s better than being huddled in some doorway or freezing to death in the street to be enjoying glorious weather now the smoking ban has become a reality. But just think of this. If you stand in the sun AND smoke you¡¯re going to end up looking like Dot Cotton .....and you¡¯ll never see her on an ad for Ambre Solaire.
