Photo: With books, girls like Fabiola now have the tools to succeed in school and pursue their dreams.
Since the library books came, I have learnt a lot. Things started sinking into my head. Now I can raise my hand in class and answer questions.鈥
At Book Aid International, we work for a world where everyone has the opportunity to read. Every year, we provide over one million brand new books to communities around the world where people would otherwise have few books, or no books at all. In June, our 蜜芽传媒 Radio 4 appeal raised over 拢16,500 - that鈥檚 enough to send 8,500 carefully selected books to readers worldwide. The books listeners have helped to send will soon be on their way to schools, libraries, refugee camps, hospitals and prisons worldwide. Publishers donate a huge range of books to us brand new, so with listeners鈥 support we鈥檒l be able to send everything from board books for the youngest readers right through to the most advanced law and medical texts 鈥 and everything in between.
For girls like Fabiola, these books really are a lifeline. Fabiola lives in rural Malawi, and, in her community, girls' education too often isn鈥檛 valued. Sometimes local boys even try to stop her attending school. But her parents support her education. They barely make ends meet as farmers, and they know that education is her ticket to a more secure future. Fabiola is determined to do well in school but before her classroom had books in it, she found reading hard work and was struggling in school. Working with our partners in Malawi, we established a school library in Fabiola鈥檚 school stocked with age-appropriate, easy-to-read books. Fabiola reads them in her free time during the day and takes them home. That extra reading time has helped her improve her reading and writing and now she鈥檚 getting better grades across the board. That鈥檚 the power of books.
We thank listeners and the 蜜芽传媒 for their support, which helps countless readers like Fabiola access the life-changing books they need.
