Thanks to the generous donations of Radio 4 listeners, LawWorks raised £6,571 which has been used to continue the work of setting up and supporting more legal clinics.
LawWorks aims to inspire and encourage lawyers and law students to engage in pro bono activity to help improve the lives of people in need. People like Maya, a three year old girl who suffers from a complex multi-system disorder. Her parents, Raj and Anita, were living in a cramped two bedroomed flat with three other people and had no knowledge of how to apply for alternative accommodation or to access the benefits to which they were entitled. However, they were able to consult Claire, a solicitor advising without charge at a legal clinic in the LawWorks network, who requested a multi-disciplinary meeting of the professionals involved in their case who subsequently put a support package in place for the family. The family have since moved to a house in Essex and now have regular visits from physiotherapists, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
We support a network of over 220 independent legal advice clinics across England and Wales where vulnerable people, who no longer qualify for legal aid and cannot afford to pay for a lawyer, can seek free advice on variety of legal issues such as welfare benefits, housing, debt, employment and family law.
LawWorks would like to thank all the individuals who donated to our appeal to help enable us to set up more clinics where families like Maya’s can seek legal advice.
