There is so much potential here. And your support, your interest, your care and concern are helping the environment, are helping the women, are bringing income to this area, are helping to reduce the negative effects of the climate crisis and are putting trees back into their natural environment to do the job. So thank you to all of your who care about tree aid.”
In March, Adjoa Andoh, star of Netflix’s Bridgerton, presented the ѿý Radio 4 appeal on behalf of Tree Aid. Adjoa travelled to Northern Ghana to see for herself the impact that trees can have on communities there.
Many people across Africa’s Sahel region are struggling with the impact of climate change. Erratic, torrential rainfall that washes away top soil, followed by long hot droughts means crops often fail in the dry, degraded land and families go hungry.
But trees are providing a solution – they are a lifeline for families. They stabilise the soil and fix nutrients into the ground, enabling crops to grow better. Trees also provide fruits, nuts and seeds that families can consume or sell at market to earn an income to buy essentials such as medicine and school books.
We were delighted that our Appeal raised over £17,000. This will enable us to provide training and machinery to women like Paulina, enabling them to care for the trees in their community.
Paulina has learnt how to turn nuts from the shea tree into butter which she sells at market. Shea butter is used in cooking and is also sold into the cosmetics industry.
The vital income Paulina earns from the sale of shea butter means her children are well fed and happy, and she has savings to fall back on during times of climate crisis.
