I thought I would have to give up being a Tailor, as it had become impossible to thread a needle and to retain the accuracy in my work.
- Patrick Tanba
Due to the generous support and donations from the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4 listeners, the Vision Aid Overseas’ appeal to improve access to eye care services and affordable spectacles in Africa raised £15,271.
Founded in 1985, Vision Aid Overseas is a leading eye care charity in the UK that enables people living in poverty in Africa to access affordable, locally based eye care services and spectacles.
Vision Aid Overseas works with professional optical volunteers across the UK and Ireland to deliver its mission across five African countries; by establishing sustainable Vision Centres where patients can receive a free eye test and low-cost prescription glasses; by training local eye care workers so that there are skilled professionals in the countries where we work and by helping to deliver outreach clinics to remote and isolated communities.
The success of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4 Appeal meant that Vision Aid Overseas could continue providing life changing eye care and spectacles so that more children in Africa who can’t see clearly, can learn and get an education and adults who can’t see clearly can earn to support their families. People like Patrick Tanba, a tailor in Sierra Leone who until he was prescribed with spectacles struggled to thread a needle to work proficiently.
Vision Aid Overseas would like to thank everyone who donated to the Appeal, Twiggy who kindly presented it and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4.
