Having contributed scripts to Educating Archie, he teamed with Barry Took and together they wrote for various radio (Round The Horne) and television (The Army Game) productions.

Working on The Frost Report led to his small screen break in At Last The 1948 Show (co-writing and appearing in, among others, the now famous Four Yorkshiremen sketch).

His bullish and zany comedy style (not to mention his beguiling, bulbous eyes: the result of a thyroid problem) earned him popular success and his own shows for both the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ and ITV, before he crossed the Atlantic to become a regular on American TV.

He had cinema success too, notably as Igor in Young Frankenstein, but his early death in 1982 whilst filming Yellowbeard robbed him of a fitting epitaph.
