Complaint
A listener complained that a headline which said “President Trump and President Zelensky trade insults over the war in Ukraine as their relationship worsens” misrepresented the reality, maintaining that the US had been guilty of “lies deceit, horrific personal and political insults” whereas Ukraine’s leader had only made “measured non-personal comments” in support of his country. The ECU considered the complaint against the standards for accuracy set out in the ѿý Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The ECU agreed, given the nature of the conversation between Presidents Trump and Zelensky, that the headline might have been better-phrased, but considered the detailed account of events in the subsequent bulletin were sufficient to ensure listeners would not have been materially misled about the nature of the exchanges.
