Praggnanandhaa: How India is emerging as a chess powerhouse, bbc.co.uk

Complaint

This online article referred to the Indian chess player Koneru Humpy as “the World Rapid Chess champion”.  A reader pointed out that Ms Humpy had been the women’s world rapid chess champion in 2019, but no longer held that title at the time of publication.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ѿý’s standards of accuracy

Outcome

The ECU agreed with the complainant that the reference was materially misleading, and that this should have been acknowledged at an earlier stage.  However, as the article had been revised before the complaint was raised with the ECU to make clear that Ms Humpy was a the “former Women's World Rapid Chess champion”, it concluded that the issue of complaint had been resolved.
