The Today Debate, Radio 4, 3 June 2025

Complaint

The debate was about the Gaza conflict and focused on the extent to which the concept of war crimes might be applicable to the actions of the parties.  A listener complained that the presenter’s introductory description of Hamas rampaging through Southern Israel and of Israeli hostages being held away from their loved ones, in the absence of equivalent phrases to describe Israel’s actions and the effect of its attacks on Gaza, amounted to bias.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s editorial standards of impartiality.

Outcome

In the ECU’s view the presenter’s phraseology was appropriate to the events of 7 October, and the impact of Israel’s actions in Gaza emerged clearly from the debate as a whole.  The ECU found nothing inconsistent with the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s standards of impartiality.
