Complaint
A viewer objected to the presenter’s reference to Donald Trump as “a convicted felon”, on the grounds that, under New York State law, a person found guilty by a jury is not a “convicted felon” until the judge passes sentence, which had not yet happened in Mr Trump’s case. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ѿý’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
Whatever the provisions of New York State law, the ECU did not consider the term “convicted felon” likely to mislead viewers in circumstances where Mr Trump had been found guilty of various offences which constitute felonies.
