Local RadioYou are in: Cornwall > Local Radio > Council Support Appeal ![]() Council Support AppealCornwall County Council is giving its support to the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal to build a children’s hospice in Cornwall and has voted in favour of adopting the appeal as the Council’s first ever official charity. Councillors at this week’s meeting of the full County Council supported a Motion by Terry Lello, the Council’s Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families and Council Leader David Whalley to support the Precious Lives Appeal launched by the Children’s Hospice South West. Proposing the Motion Terry Lello (Lib Dem) said "The County Council recognises the importance of good health care facilities for all children in Cornwall. We welcome the initiative to establish a hospice for children with terminal illness in Cornwall".
Seconding the Motion David Whalley (Lib Dem), added, "There is a great need for a children’s hospice in Cornwall. This is an exciting proposal and I hope that the County Council will support this worthwhile cause. "We welcome the fact that ѿý Radio Cornwall has adopted the Precious Lives appeal as the focus for the year and look forward to working with them to help raise as much money as possible". Supporting the Motion, Doris Ansari, the Chairman of Cornwall County Council, announced she wanted to adopt the Precious Lives Appeal as the Chairman’s official charity. "This is the first time the Chairman of the County Council has adopted an official charity and I am delighted that we will be supporting the Precious Lives Appeal” she said. "There are more than 100 children with life threatening issues in Cornwall and it is important that there is a place in the county they can go to rather than having to travel to Devon". "I wanted the blessing of my colleagues on the County Council for adopting the Precious Lives appeal as my official charity and I am delighted that they have given me this blessing". The Precious Lives Appeal to raise funds to build a third children’s hospice nearer to families in Cornwall and Plymouth was launched in September 2007. There are over 1,000 children with life limiting conditions in the South West and the new hospice will provide much needed additional hospice care for many children and their families. County Council staff and councillors will be giving their support to the fund raising activities already planned by the Precious Lives Appeal as well as staging their own events over the coming months. These include the Wear Your Wellies Day on Friday, April 25th, the Big South West Walk on June 14th, and the Big Cream Tea which is being staged during Children’s Hospice Week from September 20th to the 27th. Daphne Skinnard, Acting Managing Editor for Radio Cornwall said, "This is wonderful news.We know how essential is to have the strength of people in Cornwall behind a project. The plan to build a hospice for Cornish families has gone straight to our hearts and raising money would be far harder without this invaluable encouragement.Thank you." last updated: 03/04/2008 at 09:07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Cornwall > Local Radio > Council Support Appeal ![]() |
