Being a liberal lot, Coventry had its last public hanging 19 years before the practice ended completely in Britain.
The awful honour of being the last to hang fell on Mary Ball in 1849.

Warwickshire's finest, Shakespeare, was born and died on the same calendar date (although there were 52 years in between). Keeping things unusually neat, this means the 23 April is a double anniversary.

Opening in March 1958, the Belgrade Theatre was the first theatre to be built after World War II. It is named after the Yugoslavian city, because much of the timber used in its construction was a gift from the people of Belgrade.
