Anna's a Teenage Twitcher

Shirland's Anna Simpson talks about her interest in birdwatching and explains how she hopes to get more young people involved with nature and wildlife.

Birdwatching enjoys a rather staid reputation - think beards, waterproof jackets and tweed trousers!

But one person hoping to help change that stereotype is 18-year-old Anna Simpson fron Shirland.

Raised on a diet of Springwatch and Planet Earth, Anna has been interested in nature from an early age and now loves a day out spotting our feathered friends at sites around the county.

She's a member of Ogston Bird Club and writes an online blog featuring sightings, photographs and video footage.

Anna said: "I first got interested when I was about eight and it's grown ever since. I tend to keep quiet about it at school though because it's not something that most teenagers want to do.

"But I have taken a few friends along to Ogston with me and that's made them more interested. It's good because it's important more younger people get interested in the environment."

Anna rates the Avocet (the bird on the RSPB logo) as her favourite bird she's seen but she also loves the Golden Eagle and would love to eventually spot one herself.
