Concert Information

This afternoon sees two pieces from British composer David Matthews with whom the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic has had a long association and who celebrates his 75th birthday next year.

The music includes his A Vision of the Sea, a portrait of dawn on the Kent coast, with the pull of the tides and the sun reflected on the waves. Ruby Hughes joins to sing Mahler’s dark song cycle, Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children), setting words from the poetry of Friedrich Rückert.

Mahler mixtures feelings of anguish and grief but somehow manages to leave us with feelings that transcend tragedy.
