Concert Information

Today, old music under new spotlights as David Matthews illuminates organ music by Bach and piano music by Janáček and Nico Muhly brings his own sound world to two motets by Byrd which he sang as a choirboy. As he says “Byrd’s music has always fascinated me … on the page it looks like so little, but then in its realisation, an enormous emotional landscape unfolds.” Webern’s arrangement of the climactic ricercare from A Musical Offering sounds as fresh as the day he made it, with fine detail colouring Bach’s instrumental lines.

The concert also includes a work by a composer who left Russia and settled in Switzerland. Our conductor today, John Storgards thinks of Paul Juon as the missing link between Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. Prepare to be intrigued!
