James MacMillan dedicated his Violin Concerto to the memory of his mother and, as one critic put it, this is a work 鈥渟o full of ideas that you might wonder if he couldn鈥檛 have written two concertos鈥�. In the hands of its dedicatee, Vadim Repin, it鈥檚 an arresting companion-piece for Beethoven鈥檚 much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) 鈥楶astoral鈥� Symphony, and the quiet revolution of Debussy鈥檚 sensuous Pr茅lude; works chosen by Donald Runnicles both to complement, and to strike sparks off each other.
