Concert information

This live ѿý Radio 3 broadcast conducted by Jac van Steen begins with ‘New Fire’, a short piece composed by David Matthews and premiered last year. This is followed by Janáček’s tone poem The Fiddler’s Child.

Bohuslav Martinů composed his Third Symphony whilst living in Connecticut in 1944. In a break from the trends at the time, it has just three movements rather than four.

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston sings Alma Mahler’s Seven Songs, orchestrated by Colin and David Matthews.

Dvořák’s fairytale tone poem The Wood Dove was first premiered in 1898 under the baton of fellow composer Janáček and completes today’s programme.
