Concert Information

To mark International Women’s Day 2021 the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra will perform an all-female programme, broadcast live from the Watford Colosseum.

The first half comprises of an early work by British conductor, pianist and composer Ruth Gipps and the final instalment in a four-part cycle by contemporary Swiss composer Cécile Marti.

Like Gipps, Australian composer and critic Peggy Glanville-Hicks studied with Vaughan Williams at London’s Royal College of Music. Her Tragic Celebration and Sinfonia da Pacifica make up the latter half of tonight’s programme. Written 11 years apart, the two works showcase Glanville-Hicks’s distinctive treatment of melody and rhythmic patterns, a facet of her composition often ascribed to her love of non-Western musical traditions.

Georgia Mann presents, with British conductor Jessica Horsley on the podium.
