Agnes Gurney,
59, from Gloucestershire
Agnes was originally from China and she settled in Gloucester
years ago. In the last ten years, she's noticed that she uses more of
her own language when she meets Chinese people whereas before it would
be English. She thinks there's the change in herself and society around
her. It's a sign, she believes, that we recognise the diversity of our
country - it's OK to speak your own language and be proud of who you are.

Nasreen Akhtar, from Gloucestershire
Nasreen was originally from Pakistan and now lives in
Gloucester. She says she's living in a different society and she's sometimes
short of words. One example is the search for the appropriate words to
teach her children the right values from her society. Despite the fact
that she can speak English perfectly well, the meaning of some of the
words are sometimes confusing to her...

Lisa Donel, 55, from Gloucestershire
Lisa is originally from the United States and she tells
the story of how the way you talk can differ in a relatively short geographic
distance. She grew up only 12 miles from where her Mother did in Philadelphia.
Her mother is considered to be a well spoken intelligent woman from the
city while Lisa was (and, she says, still is!) considered to be a hick
from the country...

Elsie Olivey, 83, from Cinderford
"'Er got a mouth like a forty shilling iron pot!"
Apparently this is something quite rude about a woman, according to Elsie.
In the following interview, Elsie talks about some of the unique phrases
from the Forest of Dean. By the way, the phrase above means 'she's got a
big mouth'!
