Alney Island wildlife guide Blue Tit

Blue Tit Parus caeruleus

This colourful little bird is from the Passerines family and they are characterised by having four toes - three directed forward and one backward - which enable it to perch on branches. About 60% of all birds come from this group.

The bird is very distinctive in appearance with its black and white face and yellow underside. Its wings are brilliant blue, hence the first part of its name.

They feed on seeds, nuts, insects and spiders. They lay between seven and 16 eggs between the months of April and May.
