British Heart Foundations Grand National event
British Heart Foundations Grand National

Grand National is just horseplay!

As horses and jockeys prepare for the big fences at Aintree, the British Heart Foundation has announced that Worcester Race course is to be the venue for its Hearts First Alternative Grand National...

British Heart Foundation facts

  • The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the nation's heart charity, raising essential funds for life-saving research
  • Man or woman, you are more likely to be killed by heart and circulatory disease than by any other serious illness including cancer
  • Every two minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack - only half survive
  • The BHF funds more heart research than any other UK charity, spending £95 every minute of every day
  • It also plays an important role in funding education, both of the public and of health professionals, and in providing life-saving cardiac equipment and support for rehabilitation and patient care

It takes place on Sunday 3rd April, and there won't be a real horse in sight!

The nation's heart charity is holding a horsey style fun run around Worcester racecourse to raise essential funds for life-saving heart research.

This is the first time the charity has held the event and it hopes that people in Worcester will sign up for the one mile jog, and join in the fun by coming dressed in celebration of the equine theme.

Leslie Law MBE

Gill Burrows, the British Heart Foundation's (BHF) Event Organiser explains:

"There are many ways to go horsey for the Hearts First Alternative Grand National.

"You could pair up and go piggy back, ride a hobby horse or, if you're really courageous, dress up in a pantomime horse costume!

"It's entirely up to you.

"All we ask is that you enjoy yourself whilst helping us raise urgently needed funds for pioneering research into the causes and treatment of heart disease."Ìý

The event has received the support of Leslie Law MBE, Worcestershire's Olympic gold medallist:

"I urge people across Worcestershire to 'saddle up' for this 1 mile fun run around the racecourse.

"Have some fun getting your hearts pumping, work off your Easter eggs and help the BHF keep more vulnerable hearts beating."

Each day 657 people in the UK have their lives cut short by heart and circulatory disease.

It causes four out of ten deaths.

The BHF spends £95 every minute of every day on pioneering heart research, more than any other UK charity.

The BHF's research breakthroughs, such as clotbusting drugs, have kept thousands of hearts beating but the charity urgently needs donations; every two minutes someone has a heart attack - only half survive.

John Prosser, aged 61 of Drakes Broughton in Worcestershire, was one of the lucky ones.

He suffered a heart attack in Worcester High Street in March 2003.

He is now fully recovered, thanks to major surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and volunteers at the cardiac unit at the Royal Worcester Hospital.Ìý

The Hearts First Alternative Grand National starts at 11am and costs just £7 per adult and £3 per child to pre-register (Registration on the day costs £10 per adult and £5 per child).Ìý
