1916 Easter Rising Gallery
Image of a World War One propaganda postcard
"How is freedom measured? By the efforts which it costs to retain freedom!" This propaganda postcard uses the bold image of a young woman with a rifle in one hand and the union flag incorporating the Red Hand of Ulster in the other to encourage Ulstermen to fight in France. Unionists believed that if they helped Britain in her hour of need, Westminster would not force ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Rule on them when the war was over. ©
