I was born in Dulverton, Somerset. My mum had been evacuated from Hackney in order to give birth to me. My mum since told me it was quite frightening being pregnant during the war.

We came to Hackney when I was still young, one day a bomb dropped on the house. My mother told me that I was saved from injury by my hair which was thick and frizzy. My hair caught alight but it didn’t reach any further.

My mum has always told me that I should never moan about my hair because it saved my life!
