I was an evacuee and stayed with a family in Stroud and have one or two unpleasant memories including being sent to the hairdressers who charged two shillings, then when it needed cutting again she charged half a crown. When I told the person I was staying with she sent me back to get the extra money as we needed every penny we could in those days.
I was married at 19, but my marriage failed 2 years after that and I went to work for Heals, the furniture makers. I then re-married and left work to bring up my child. I guess being an evacuee didn’t really harm me in the long run.
