When I was a boy I remember when an
un-exploded bomb was dropped at the entrance
to Stainton Lane, I was at the time in my room in bed at High House listening to the planes flying over and I heard a swishing sound, my brother rushed into the room saying that was a bomb dropping.
At the time our parents were outside in the Kitchen Garden, looking over towards Grange,
It was being raided at the time.
In the morning my brother and I went to see where the bomb had dropped and found it in Mr Kitchen~s field at Storth end, it had not gone off, it was a deep hole so we threw some stones into it.Later on in the day a Policeman arrived on his cycle and put up a notice on the gate UN-EXPLODED BOMB
KEEP OUT.Only the very locals will remember
that bit of excitement
