On this particular day in July 1944 I was delivering milk in Ore Village, when a doodlebug came overhead and all of a sudden the anti-aircraft guns opened fire and hit it. I was sure the doodlebug was heading for my house in Broomgrove Road and I jumped straight into my van and drove home, only to find that my house was safe but the doodlebug had fallen in Pine Avenue and killed a man. My first reaction was absolute relief when I knew my house and family were safe and secondly I realized that I had changed my route that morning and doing so had saved my life. I would have been in Pine Avenue delivering next door to the house where the doodlebug had fallen, instead of Fairlight Road. I felt an extremely lucky girl.
