The following story appears courtesy of and with thanks to The Liverpool Diocesan Care and Repair Association and James Taylor.
It wasn’t difficult to feed my family during the war as I only had one child. My mother and father had the business so I wasn’t so bad off. We got the usual rations and if you went to the butchers you had to take what he gave you, not what you wanted. You couldn’t go in and ask for half a pound of steak. After handing in your ration book the butcher would give you what he had available.
