My father Captain James (Mac) McKinney (a Geordie) served with the Border Regiment, 2nd Battalion in the Burma Campaign. On his return to England he was sent to Nottingham and put in charge of the German prisoners at the POW camp in Wollaton Hall.
My mother (Maisie) a war widow whose husband (Ron Hall)had been on the Stratagem submarine believed to have been sunk or captured by the Japanese, was in charge at the Ministry of Works in Nottingham and her job was to find work for the prisoners with local farms.
They were regularly in contact and subsequently started dating and eventually got married. Mum already had a little girl with her first husband and went on to have five other children with my Dad. Mum died in 1998 after 52 years of marriage and Dad is still very much alive now aged 89. He still attends the local Burma Association meetings and looks fter himself as all old soldiers do! We are planning a huge 90th party for Dad next May and no-one will enjoy it more than him.
