I lived in West London during the war near the airdrome at Northolt. I remember one Sunday in 1940 when I was 17 I was playing football. Suddenly in the sky we saw a plane to our right and 3 Spitfires to our left. I saw them drop three bombs over the airdrome. We all ran to shelter in a nearby building site. The planes were shot down with a bren gun. We weren’t really scared we just got used to things like that going on around. The others in my football team went on to become bomber pilots all but one survived. One thing I remember about the food was awful whalemeat sausages they tasted disgusting. We also ate soya sausages which were horrible too. A good place to eat though was in a “British Restaurant”, they had these all over the country. You could get a good feed without having to surrender your ration book. You could get a meal for only a shilling.
