Location: Gold Street Northampton
A Tragic Recreational Imprint.
During the war a bomber, a Lancaster or Stirling, crashed in our main shopping street, Gold Street. It bypassed the main church, which stood right in the centre of Northampton. Its wings scraped all the shops the whole length of the street. The crew had baled out. The pilot was the last to leave and left it too late so the imprint of his body was left in Kingsthorpe Recreation ground. It was a white imprint. No grass grew there for ages. I should think everyone in Kingsthorpe went to see this ghastly incident.
