My Dad worked long hours, and when he came home, Mum would always cook him Scouse. I remember once the sirens sounding as he was about to eat. Rushing out Mum quickly put a lid on the Scouse. Eventually, the ‘All Clear’ sounded, and we returned home. Just as Dad was about to eat, the siren was repeated. Dad said: “Not taking me off again!” He snatched the plate. Half an hour later — Dad was starving, and yes the siren went again.
