I joined up in 1941 and was discharged in 1945. I was a driver in the ATS, based mostly at the HQ in Gosforth, Newcastle. I started off as a car driver and spent 18 months at Hexham and drove a wagon (left hand drive American). I worked for an Army mobile bakery (1942/3) and was stationed at the Hexham Hydro for fourteen months.

We went to the Supply depots with bread and visited different places every weekday. We also went to Featherstone Park, beside Haltwhistle which was an Italian prisoner of war camp.
