Alice lived in Ilford during the war and was the eldest of 8 children. She used to work in a factory where she did a lot of war work, sewing khaki for uniforms. She remembers how frightening the bombing was and how she felt so sad that “mankind could get so low as to bomb each other”. In their street they all had their own air raid shelters in their gardens and that was where they spent their hours when the sirens went off. Her street was bombed but “not too badly”. Some of her brothers were in the army and some in the navy but she was lucky and they all came home after the war. Some of her neighbours were not so lucky and lost family. She remembers how good it felt when the war ended and how they had a huge street party with all the flags on the trees.
