German planes going overhead to London encountered spitfires. I was in bed. I heard them fighting and guns firing. German planes started dropping bombs. The next thing I knew, someone was shouting for me to get up and take my two sisters and my mother next door because he was going to help to put the fire bombs out.

The next morning when I went to work I could see where the incendiary bombs had fallen. On my way home from work I was told I couldn’t go that way because there was a large bomb that had landed underneath a farm house and it hadn’t exploded. The road was closed for about a week but I cycled to work every day. I had to get there! On the first night when I arrived home from work, I found we had a lodger.

It was one of my work mates. The bomb had landed opposite his house. It did lots of damage. It burnt out someone’s cider shed. In spite of the unexploded bomb, I still cycled to work other wise I would have had to go miles out of my way.
