During the war I was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). At one time I was stationed at Colchester. We used to plot aircraft coming over (both friendly and hostile). We mapped on a big round table on which was a map of the British Isles. We recieved the plots over our headphones from RAF Uxbridge, and these were in turn relayed to all AA gun sites in the area.
The doodle-bugs were the most frightening, because we knew that they kept to a straight course until their engine cut out, and then exploded. I used to pray that it would miss the built up area and explode in open country.
