I was stationed at an RAF base outside Newquay, Cornwall. I joined the RAF in 1940, when I was 18 years old. I remember when we were on drill parade outside an hotel car park. I had done something wrong as far as the drill was concerned, and the Sergeant came over to me and said, “Anderson, what rank are you?” I said, “AC 2 Sergeant”. He said, “Do you know why you are an AC 2”. I said, “No Sergeant”. “Well I’ll tell you. You’re an AC 2, because there is no such rank as an AC 3”.
