At the time of the war Darwen looked very different to the way that it is today. There were lots of trams, factories and weaving mills. There were also plenty of cinemas, I remember that there was one on Bolton Road and another on Duckworth Street.

I remember seeing Ghandi walking down the main street in Darwen after he had opened India Mill.

In those days everyone went to Sunday school, which was on in the morning, afternoon and evening. Most people went to church.
