A memory that I frequently remember about the begining of the Second World War - This is of a great big bomb that was hanging in a tree about a mile away from Bancombe Road in Somerton, which was where both my friend, Jim, and I lived.
It was called a landmine. There were several, we suspect, that the bomber crew just got rid of them. I think that a total of fifteen were found.
This particular pleasant surprise were found suspended in the trees ,you see they were dropped on the end of a parachute and in this instance they were about one mile away and the surprising thing was that not one went off........Whew!
None seemed to know why they did not go off but if they had the a large part of Somerton would have been affected. Both Jim and I saw them hanging in the branches until we were forcibly made to leave the area. The very brave bomb disposal blokes disarmed them all and took them away and got rid of them. Out of a stick of fifteen that were probably dropped by two aircraft NOT ONE WENT OFF. As they would say these days, how lucky was that?
