FEAR is my greatest memory of W.W.2. Through the eyes of a young child.
The fear of not being able to work the pump on my baby sister's gas mask if my mother was unable to do it.
The fear of having my gas mask tested and it may be leaking. No-one had explained to me that is was not 'real' gas at the testing stations.
The fear of German Paratroopers landing in our street.
The fear of hearing the sirens and not being able to find my way home or to the nearest shelter.
The fear of seeing that my grandparents were sleeping in a tunnel in the cliffs between Dumpton and Ramsgate when the Kent coast was getting severely shelled - where once a little train had run through from Dumpton to Ramsgate Sands in happier times before the war.
These are some of my wartime memories.
