The Doodlebug raids in the latter part of the war were perhaps the most nerve-racking time even for children. They appeared to stop right overhead followed by a period of several seconds before the crash came.
On one occasion when sheltering in our cupboard under the stairs I was clutching our much loved ginger cat that had an exceptionally loud purr.
It sounded so much like an approaching Doodlebug that my Mother was heard to say "Purr" if you must Sandy but don't stop your engine."
