This is not my story, although I feel almost a part of it. In fact, I do not known the people involved, although it is possible I might have met them.
Some 20 years ago I found in a book, (I think purchased in a jumble sale in Malvern) a 5 in. disc which was an airmail voice letter sent in May 1945 from "somewhere overseas". Security dictated that even in at that stage of the war, there was no clue as to where it was posted. The censor鈥檚 stamp shows that the sender was in the RAF. Beyond a Kingston on Thames postmark of 29 May 1945, all is mystery.
It was sent by "Barratt Charles 1613874" to a "Miss J A Cossey" of 鈥淪t Aubyn鈥檚鈥, Cowleigh Bank, Malvern. Despite the terminal fragility of the disc, I managed to transcribe it, and the quality is remarkable. Certainly not the telephone squawk I expected. I guess I must have been only the second or third person to hear this in 50 years. It is as if he were talking to her in person, and not (by the gist of the message) half the world away. It is so very personal that I have never played the transcription since 鈥 it would be eavesdropping.
I would dearly love to know what happened next.
Is any chance of finding the rest of the Romance Across The Seas?
