After the forces I was based in Eglinton for six weeks at camp defence and there was a red alert one evening. I had to rush down to where there were twin Browning’s at the dispersery I was on. There was supposed to be another man there but he didn’t turn up. I pulled the covers off and there were no guns there either! They’d been taken away to be serviced and they were supposed to put two machine guns on instead.
While I was there, at one point there was a German plane, and it was pitch black, because of the blackout, and I saw this shadow come right out over me at no height, and I’d no guns to shoot with! She didn’t bomb anything that night, maybe it was better that we couldn’t shoot her! I had a shock.
