Returning home after almost four years in the Far East on the troopship ‘Athlone Castle’ we arrived at Southampton on 11th November 1945.
Steaming up the Solent the ship’s tannoy was relaying the Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph. Just as the announcer was saying “The King now steps forward to lay his wreath” the ship came to rest mid channel and the anchor let down. There was a tremendous rattle of the anchor chain which caused quite a laugh as some wag shouted “He’s dropped it”!
