I remember the bombing of Greenock. The suger refinery was bombed. It was frightening. At that time I was at my boarding school in Glasgow. As Captain of the school I had the rank of Warrant Officer in the JTC [Junior Training Corps]. On many occasions we went to camp on the coast near Largs.
I remember that there was food rationing. I had plain food e.g. porridge. I had boiled eggs at the weekends.
My father had a marine engineering business in Gourock. He suffered a minor injury from the bombing.
On VE Day I was 18. I was at the Glasgow Academy, and I led a procession through the streets of Glasgow. There was a lot of cheering.
I won an Exhibition Scholarship to Caius College, Cambridge, to start on my return from National Service.
