ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH WHITLEY V N1349, THE FIFTH PRODUCTION WHITLEY V, FLOWN ON 12 OCCASIONS BY P/O H.J.WALTERS WHEN WITH “C” FLIGHT 10 OTU, BETWEEN 29TH JUNE, 1941 AND 20TH FEBRUARY, 1942. Crashed night of 2/2/42 when on a cross country with a trainee crew of 6 in a Whitley V. at Bedworth near Nuneaton after the starboard engine had failed and caught fire when at 3,000ft. Owing to port engine overheating baled out 5 of crew and tried to land. It was very dark night but landed in a corn field with undercarriage retracted and stuck a tree. Received burns on hands and face and admitted to Cosford Hospital until 4/12/12. Medical category now A2 B.Bh non-operational. Light aircraft only. Day light only. Height under 5,000. Next C.M.B 4/1/44.

On 21st Oct, 1940, P/O Brown, Sgt Leonard Adlam, second pilot and Sgt Marcel C.Caryll-Tilken, Air Gunner were killed, and Sgt. Robert Langfield, wireless operator and Sgt C.S.G.Green were seriously injured when their 58 Squadron Whiltey was shot down by a lone German intruder (Hptm Karl Hulshoff of I/NJG2) on Greenhow Moor in the North Yorshire Moors, (O.S. Sheet 93, ref. 598022) shortly before reaching Linton-on-Ouse, following serious damage and injuries to P/O Brown over the target Plzen, Checkoslovakia. This is believed to have been the first occasion when a lone German intruder shot down an RAF bomber over England in WW11.

P/O Brown and Sgts Caryll-Tilken and Langfield were from Sgt H.J.Walters’ crew.

enough power to clear the lowest pass in the Alps, turned in the pass and returned to bomb the docks in CALAIS, direct hit on an ammunition dump.
