“When the bombing started in September 1940, we moved to Bromley, Kent. We shared a house with an aunt and uncle where we could reinforce the cellar to sleep in when the bombing was bad�

“I experienced some bombing, and in September 1940, an aunt was bombed out and died later as a consequence of this.�

“Neighbouring houses were bombed and people killed. I particularly remember a senior girl at school being killed when fire watching the parish church.�

“A local labourer insisted on sawing up a tree which a bomb had felled across the road as he thought it was dangerous for the traffic-this was while the bombing was going on!�
